On tv's for example; 100,000:1 Contrast Ratio. What does that mean?

It is the ratio of brightness between the white and black of the TV. So a 100,000:1 contrast ratio means that that TV's white is 100,000 times brighter than its black. So, the higher the ratio, the more depth there is to the black of a display, the better.
